Girl Magnets Guitar Players Are “Girl Magnets”

It was going to be a long, hot summer so I looked through my college catalogue for a nice “cool” class.  Music theory seemed to be the only choice I had.  At the time I had no idea that class would lead me straight into an overwhelming interest in learning to play a guitar

My music class started off easy enough, but soon we were required to learn every chord with all the sharps and flats AND we had to say it at “speed of light” when the professor called on us.  He had a stopwatch to make sure we were fast enough.  The “Commander of the Stopwatch” kept yelling, “Faster, faster!”  My blood pressure went up.

Before long we were emersed in reading and writing classical music. You know, Bach and Beethoven.  All the time I kept complaining, “But I just want to learn to play the guitar. I don’t care about Bach or Beethoven or Hyden or all the rest of the so-call classical musicians.”

I yelled over and over, “I don’t want to know!” I want to be a rock star.  I want to play rock guitar.  But no one listened to me.

Then I heard these horrible words, “We only teach classical guitar here.”

“NOoo!” I screamed.

There were kiosks located around the campus.  A kiosk was a roof shaded area with benches where students went to smoke.  AND… guitar players went to show off their chops (skills).

The kiosks was where I learned that guitar players are “girl magnets”.  I watched one guitar player who could not even play.  But he was there strumming a few strings and a whole group of girls were sitting at his feet, looking up into his eyes and adoring him.

I spent that summer learning to write music in 4 voices (tenor, bass, alto and soprano).  I knew I would never use that information, but I was learning rhythm which would be very useful in playing the guitar.

I wandered the campus that semester in search of kiosks and guitars and adorning fans.

AND I got a subscription to all the rock guitar magazines.  Then I sat down to catch up on a whole 40 years of rock and roll and everything that came after.

“What lesson did you learn here in this post? ”

“You can be a rock star and have girls falling at your feet even if you only know a little bit about guitar playing.”

But think about what you could do if you knew how to play the guitar really well.  You can take your guitar lessons right here starting at the very beginning.

From playing clubs in Houston and Austin to composing his own songs, Robby Brewer is our guitar instructor.  Click the Demo Tab above to hear a couple of songs that he wrote.
